Sustainable cotton refers to cotton that is grown and produced in an environmentally and socially responsible way. This means that the cotton is farmed using practices that minimize the impact on the environment, conserve natural resources, and promote biodiversity. It also means that the workers involved in the production of the cotton are treated fairly and receive a living wage.

Our cotton trading business connects sustainable cotton producers and consumers in markets around the globe, and is a major buyer of cotton produced in Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and India. Our cotton traders team work closely with partners in these countries to help increase their competitiveness in domestic and international markets.

Traditional cotton production can have a significant impact on the environment and on the people involved in its production. Cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops in the world, and the use of these chemicals can have negative effects on the soil, water, and wildlife. In addition, many cotton farmers and workers are paid very low wages and work in unsafe conditions. By promoting sustainable cotton production, we can work to minimize these negative impacts and create a more responsible and sustainable textile industry.

There are several different approaches to making cotton production more sustainable, including organic farming, regenerative agriculture, and fair trade practices.

Better Cotton

Better Cotton is the world’s leading sustainability initiative for cotton. Their mission is to help cotton communities survive and thrive, while protecting and restoring the environment. In 2005, as part of a round-table initiative convened by WWF, a group of visionary organizations came together to form Better Cotton and ensure the product’s sustainable future. Targray has been a registered member of Better Cotton since 2022.

Cotton Made in Africa

Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) is the association behind one of the world’s leading standards for sustainably produced cotton. Its goal is to help people help themselves, via trade rather than donations, in order to improve the living and working conditions of smallholder farmers in Africa and to protect our environment. Targray is a CmiA-verified cotton trader, and all of its transactions are registered on the association’s SCOT (Sustainable Cotton Tracker) platform.
